Deposits, payments and cancellations

Accepted Answer

For weekend workshops, a £139 deposit  is required to confirm your booking. This can be paid using the PayPal  button on the website or by BACS once I’ve sent you an invoice. The remaining balance must be paid at least 28 days before  the workshop date in order to secure your place; if the balance is not  received by this point, you may lose your place and your deposit may  also be forfeited. 
In order to ensure that late cancellations do not  make courses unviable, we have a robust policy around refunds, and it is  recommended that you consider taking out insurance to protect against  unforeseen events, as you can arrange insurance to cover any financial  loss caused by a cancellation but we cannot do this on your behalf. Once  paid, course fees are not refundable, but they may be  transferable to a later workshop if the spare space can be filled by  another student before the course runs (either by me, or by you finding a  replacement).
For all other courses, a £50 deposit is requested at the time of booking, again either via the PayPal button or by BACS when I send your invoice. The balance is due once we have confirmed a date, and is payable by BACS on receipt of invoice. In all cases, deposits are required to secure your date and are non‑refundable, except in exceptional circumstances. However, you’re welcome to move your booking to a future date within 12 months of the deposit being paid, provided reasonable notice is given.

Question 2

What smartphone do I need?

Accepted Answer

Any modern smartphone is fine – iPhone or Android. As long as it has a working camera and you can install free apps, you’ll be able to take part fully. You don’t need the latest model or a “pro” phone; in fact, part of the workshop is about getting the best from whatever device you already use.

Question 3

What should I bring with me?

• Comfortable outdoor shoes – we won’t be walking far, but some paths may be uneven.
 • Your smartphone, fully charged, plus a power bank or charger if you have one.
 • A lightweight waterproof or extra layer so you’re comfortable if the weather changes.
 • Drinks and snacks to keep you going between stops.
 • A small notebook and pen if you like to jot things down (I’ll also provide handouts).
 • Some change or a payment card in case we need to pay for parking.

Do I need insurance?

Accepted Answer

I’m afraid I’m not able to insure against client cancellations, which is why workshop payments are non‑refundable. To protect your booking, I strongly recommend taking out suitable travel or holiday insurance that covers course or workshop fees in case you have to cancel unexpectedly (for example due to illness, family emergencies or travel disruption). This way, you should be able to claim back your costs if something unforeseen prevents you from attending.

Question 5

What level do I need to be at with my photography?

Accepted Answer

No prior knowledge is required, as the course is designed for beginners. As long as you have a suitable smartphone, and the enthusiasm to learn, then you will be fine! The course is also suitable for photographers who have a little knowledge and want to improve.

Question 6

Is it all about landscape photography?

Accepted Answer

Although the course is mainly aimed at teaching you how to take better landscape photos, many of the basic skills (such as how to use your camera, how to improve composition) are applicable to most photography genres. During the weekend we will touch upon some other genres such as pet, people and macro.

Question 7

How many people will be on the workshop?

Accepted Answer

There will be a maximum of 6 participants on this workshop, which keeps the group small enough for plenty of individual attention and flexibility on location choices. So you’ll have lots of opportunity to ask questions, get feedback on your images, and receive one‑to‑one guidance out on location and during the editing sessions.

What happens if the weather is bad?

We can cope with most weather, but heavy rain means we can't do the location shoots at the coast. If this happens, I will adjust the agenda for the weekend as much as possible so that we make the most of any dry weather. So far, in five years, we have never had a weekend where we couldn't get out at all and take photos!

Question 10

How much walking is involved?

I usually choose locations that don’t involve too much walking, so we can spend more time taking photos and less time travelling between spots. However, you will need reasonable mobility and be comfortable walking up to around half a mile, sometimes over uneven or sloping ground such as coastal paths, moorland or beaches. Where possible, I’ll tailor the specific locations to the overall fitness and mobility of the group, so if you have any concerns, please let me know in advance.
